After you take out the phrase 'In the beginning', you have....
Essay |
Jake didn't know where to go.
This would be a great 'anecdotal' beginning for an essay on any conflict that a teenager might be going through. The reader is drawn right into your essay. |
Article |
Jake didn't know where to go.
If you are writing an article about a contemporary topic, this would be an excellent way to start your article. The next sentence should mention what Jake was facing and what topic you are writing about. If you are writing about drugs, alcohol, suicide, - you can either make Jake the victim or a friend of the victim. |
Story |
Jake didn't know where to go.
For a story, you would want to provide more information (a visual image) about Jake. "His torn clothes provided little shelter against the cold winter night and pouring rain. He couldn't hear the sirens behind him or the screams coming from across the street. He just walked." |
Novel |
Jake didn't know where to go.
For a novel, you could provide a flashback to the reader before getting into the details of what Jake is going to do next. "He barely remembered the girl that he had met a year ago. He did remember how intoxicated he was by her long flowing hair, her delicate laugh, and her unique perfume. No one had warned him." |
Poem |
Jake didn't know where to go.
For a poem, you would select any of the words that inspire you. You could write a poem about anyone named 'Jake'. You could write a poem about 'knowing' or 'not knowing'. You could write a poem about 'going' or 'not going' anywhere. |
Below are
the beginning lines
of some famous literary works following the phrase
"I want to say that...." |
|
Poetry |
Most poets are guided by intuition. However, if you want to try to write a poem but you do not know how to begin, try the "I want to say that..." phrase.
Do you recognize the famous beginning lines? I want to say that death, be no proud, though some have called thee mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;... I want to say that I meant to do my work today. I want to say that it was many and many a year ago. I want to say that it was once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary... ( See answers below ) |
Speeches |
Do you recognize the famous beginning lines?
I want to say that I have a dream. I want to say that four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, .... I want to say that my heart goes out in sympathy to any one who is making his first appearance before an audience of human beings. I want to say that if we shadows have offended, think but this and all is mended. ( See answers below ) |
Article |
You can begin writing any article by using the phrase "I want to say that..."
Write your sentence and then take out the "I want to say that..." phrase. I want to say that friendship is one of the most important things in life. I want to say that today, more and more children are diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. I want to say that yesterday's earthquake in Chile was devastating. I want to say that Whitney Houston's death shocked many people. I want to say that the next presidential race is going to be a reflection on our economy, our jobless rates, and our health concerns. |
Essay |
Do you recognize the famous beginning lines?
I want to say that perchance he for whom this bell tolls may be so ill as that he knows not it tolls for him. I want to say that man is his own star;... I want to say that I heartily accept the motto, - "That government is best which governs least;" ( See answers below ) Using the phrase "I want to say that..." also helps when you are given a writing question or an essay writing prompt. For Example, you are given the following writing prompt: High school classes should not begin before 9:00 a.m. Do you agree or disagree? You could begin your essay with: I want to say that there are many advantages to beginning high school classes before 9:00 a.m. After you take out the phrase "I want to say that...", you are left with a strong and clear opening sentence: There are many advantages to beginning high school classes before 9:00 a.m. |
Short Story |
Do you recognize the famous beginning lines?
I want to say that I didn't wear shoes regularly until I was in high school... I want to say that strong-willed Tabitha Brown sat beside the fireplace, moving back and forth in her rocking chair. I want to say that for the four days since his father's accident, it had snowed intermittently. I want to say that I never knew anyone so keenly alive to a joke as the king was. I want to say that the thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge. ( see answers below ) |

TV and Movie scripts |
Do you get tired of watching TV shows and movies that keep repeating the same themes? Maybe you have an idea for an innovative theme or conflict that has not been used yet for a script.
Interestingly, history books are some of the most valuable resources for TV shows or movie ideas. Many movies have been made on the major topics of history. However, there were many more courageous people in the history of time that are not so well known. Explore any history book for a person who has made a difference in the life of someone else and you will have a great script idea. If you do not like history, another way to find innovative themes for scripts is to research Shakespeare themes on the internet. You can use many of Shakespeare's themes in a variety of TV shows or movies. To learn more about Shakespeare's legacy, please visit our Shakespeare and Emotions page. |
Depending on your writing style, you can either leave the phrase "In the end" or take it out.
Essay |
In the end, it will not be technology that directs the course of human life but each individual and how he decides to use that technology.
This would be a possible ending for an essay if you would like to write about the impact of technology on any aspect of life. Once you have your final sentence and your major point, you can work backwards on subtopics that would be interesting for your readers. |
Article |
In the end, we can expect to learn a lot more about neuroplasticity and its affect on every aspect of our life.
If you are writing an article about any topic, beginning with the end will give you a better direction on what your main message is, what you want the reader to learn, and why a publisher would want to buy your article. |
Story |
In the end, all vanished.
This could be the ending for a story about dreams, about hopes, about despair, or memories. |
Novel |
In the end, he knew that he would never see them again.
For a novel, this final sentence could provide you with ideas on what your novel would be about. Was the main character's encounter with 'them' positive or negative? What did he experience? Would the reader be happy or sad when reading the sentence? After writing your novel, you could leave the sentence as it is or revise it to - "He knew he would never see them again." or "He would never see them again." |
Poem |
In the end, all vanished.
Even for a poem, you can use the "In the end..." technique, to come up with an idea. Vanished could end up to be your poem's title or your last word, or both. |
Man | against | Man |
Self | Self | |
Society | Society | |
Nature | Nature | |
Technology | Technology
Fate | Fate | |
Higher Power | Higher Power

Conflict | Literary Work |
Man against Man | Richard Connell''s short story The Most Dangerous Game is a suspense story about one man chasing another man on a remote island - a hunt for life and death. The author integrates the conflicts of man against nature, man against self, man against society, and man against fate but focuses his story line (plot) on the main conflict - man against man. |
Man against Self | Robert Frost's famous poem The Road Not Taken focuses on the conflict between man and self. "Two roads diverged in the wood, And sorry I could not travel both..." Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Tell-Tale Heart is a wonderful short story depicting the conflict Man against Self. |
Man against Society | Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. excellently depicts the conflict of man against society in his short story Harrison Bergeron . "The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal." |
Man against Nature | This is a very common conflict used in poems, short stories, novels, and movies. |
Man against Technology | This conflict is commonly used in many science fiction stories and movies. The conflict can also be found in stories as old as Ovid's The Story of Daedalus and Icarus , Charles Malam's poem Steam Shove l, or in the most recent March 14, 2012 article "45,000 caught cheating at Britain's universities"published by The Independent . The article explores the conflict of how technology makes it harder and harder to catch up with cheating students. |
Man against Fate | This conflict can be found in most any literary work. It is also the focus of many newspaper articles that report natural disasters, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or about surviving an unlikely situation. W.W. Jacobs' short story The Monkey's Paw is an excellent example for this conflict with the message "Do not interfere with fate." |
Man against a Higher Power | In contrast to the conflict of Man against Fate, the conflict of Man against a Higher Power personifies who is responsible for certain events or outcomes. In religious works, that Higher Power is often God. In science fiction works, that Higher Power can be another planet or alien race. In poetry, that Higher Power can be an artistic gift. |
Man against an Unknown | Edgar Allan Poe's poem Annabel Lee as well as The Raven are great examples for Man against an Unknown. Whether the antagonist (the enemy) is fate, a curse, a Higher Power, or the narrator's subconscious Self - it is left to the reader. As a writer, you might have a plan of who the "Unknown" is but choose not tell the reader until the middle or end of your poem, article, story, or novel. |

How | How did it all begin? How is it going to end? How did Jake get to be where he is now? How is someone going to help him? |
Why | Why is the main character in this situation? |
Withholding information | Withholding information is a writing technique where you do not provide the reader with all the answers. Withholding information can be a powerful tool in the beginning of your writing since the reader will continue reading to find out the answers to some questions. |
Poetry |
Many writers write poetry as a means of self expression. However, many writers also have papers over papers filled with poems stacked away in some drawer. Throughout history, many poets' amazing words were not discovered until after their deaths.
Be courageous! Your poem might make a difference in someone else's life. Having a poem is like having a child. At some point, letting it go is its final destiny. If you are hesitant about whether your poem is good or not, begin sharing it with someone who is willing to give you honest feedback. Once you take that first step, you always have the choice to put your poem back in the drawer or to publish it. |
Article |

Short stories are a great way to explore a conflict or a topic that interests you in a fictional setting. Add insights into your story that others might not know about. Your story can be extraordinary because you are discussing issues that someone older or younger might not have to deal with or know about. Each generation has its own challenges. By writing about the challenges of your generation, your story can become
a witness of time
.
